Socio-economic impacts of onshore gas activity in Southern Queensland

Evaluating medium-term socio-economic impacts of onshore gas activities in Southern Queensland

This CSIRO research project evaluated demographic and economic changes during two decades of onshore gas operations in rural regions of Queensland, Australia.

CSIRO researchers explored and analysed secondary data, primarily from 2011 to 2021 Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Population Census, to identify and evaluate impacts that natural gas extraction could have had in communities across these regions during the last two decades (2001 – 2011 and 2011 – 2021).

High level key findings:

  • Education levels of residents were higher in Surat Basin areas with onshore gas operations, compared to areas without such operations.
  • Employment (mining jobs) and income growth initially increased during the first decade and then steadied in the second decade.
  • Arrival and retainment of young adults were greater in Surat Basin areas with onshore gas operations, compared to areas without such operations.
