GISERA research addresses the social, economic and environmental challenges and opportunities created by Australia's onshore gas industry

CSIRO’s GISERA was established to provide independent scientific research that contributes constructively and objectively to understanding the impacts of Australia’s onshore gas industry.

Research conducted through GISERA is informed by, and is of benefit to, the broader community. Research outcomes aim to assist decision making across all impacted stakeholder groups.

Research by location

New South Wales

GISERA expanded its social and environmental research focus to NSW in 2015. Work was initially focused around the Macarthur and Narrabri regions of NSW.

Northern Territory

In September 2018, GISERA partnered with the Northern Territory Government to deliver independent and transparent advice on gas development in the Territory.

Queensland

Since GISERA’s launch in 2011, over 30 projects have commenced in Qld and most have been completed. Work has been centered around the Surat Basin.

South Australia

In 2018, GISERA partnered with the South Australian Government to investigate the environmental, social and economic impacts of conventional gas development in South East South Australia.

Western Australia

In July 2020, GISERA partnered with the Western Australian Government to deliver independent and transparent advice on gas development.
